Military Satellite Orbits
Explore orbital mechanics, coverage patterns, and threats to space assets
Step 1 / 8Kepler's Third Law
Satellites orbit the Earth at different altitudes, and the higher they go, the longer each orbit takes. A satellite at 400 km altitude circles the Earth in about 90 minutes. Move it out to 35,786 km and it takes exactly 24 hours, appearing to hover over one spot. This relationship between altitude and orbital period is described by Kepler's third law.
