Step 1 / 8Ballistic Missile Phases

A ballistic missile flight has three phases. In the boost phase the rocket engines fire, pushing the missile upward through the atmosphere. During the midcourse phase, the engines have shut off and the warhead coasts through space on a ballistic arc, reaching altitudes above 1,000 km for intercontinental missiles. In the terminal phase the warhead re-enters the atmosphere and dives toward its target. Each phase presents different challenges for defenders.
