Step 1 / 8Real Aperture Limitation
A radar antenna in space creates a beam that spreads out with distance. At orbital altitudes of 500-700 km, even a large antenna produces a footprint several kilometres wide on the ground. The angular width of the beam is inversely proportional to the antenna length: a shorter antenna makes a wider beam. This means a real aperture radar in orbit cannot resolve fine details on the ground without an impossibly large antenna.
