Step 1 / 8SATCOM Link Basics

A satellite communication link has two paths. The uplink carries signals from a ground terminal up to the satellite. The downlink carries signals from the satellite back down to the receiving terminal. The satellite acts as a relay, receiving on one frequency and retransmitting on another. Both paths travel tens of thousands of kilometres, so the signals are very weak by the time they arrive.
